Personal Bio

Leigh Munro lives in rural North Auckland  amongst 10 acres of biodiverse land comprised of native bush, fertile pasture, framed by mountainous and dramatic Skies.

On a daily basis something new and astonishing presents itself –insects, birds, vegetation, sound, wind and weather – in ever-changing colours, energies and light. Tensions between transience and timelessness can be experienced in this wild environment –

Leigh States; “I attempt to communicate and express natural cycles and patterns of energy both observed and experienced in the land I inhabit. Here, plant and wild life calls out, competing and reproducing in cycles of life and death. I notice organic matter in constant transformation – biodiversity thriving, degrading, recombining, renewing. The ecology is vibrant yet delicate, and the elements hum in constant flux. All is fluid, nothing stands still. Yet a kind of stillness can also be found here."

These ecologies and experiences are reflected in Munro’s approach to painting, exploring these natural rhythms and expressing them in paint. Through gestural abstraction, layers of paint are placed in organic tension with processes of erasure in a dynamic push-and-pull.
